Gadzoox Networks and CNT Announce Certified SAN-to-WAN Connectivity Solution
Gadzoox Capellix Switch and CNT UltraNet Open Systems Gateway Enabling SAN-Based Disaster Tolerance over ATM
SAN JOSE, Calif. and MINNEAPOLIS, May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Gadzoox Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: ZOOX) and Computer Network Technology (CNT) (Nasdaq: CMNT), leading providers of SAN (storage area network) products, today announced certified SAN-to-WAN (wide area network) connectivity solutions. Joint testing was recently completed, certifying the interoperability of Gadzoox' Capellix switch and CNT's UltraNet Open Systems Gateway. For end-users seeking to implement remote storage management or disaster tolerance systems which connect multiple SANs over extended distances, this certified solution provides a fast, economical, and interoperable alternative to existing methods. Unlike solutions that suffer from the high cost and limited distance of private "dark fiber" connections, SAN-to-WAN solutions support unlimited distances at lower cost since they can utilize existing ATM networks.
"Disaster tolerance is becoming a more important consideration for users adopting SAN technology," says Steve Duplessie, Founder of the Enterprise Storage Group. "Existing ATM networks can now be leveraged to interconnect SAN islands over great distances, providing a much higher level of business continuity. With Gadzoox and CNT users can reap extended distance benefits of their existing ATM infrastructure."
In the emerging phases of the market, SAN deployments have been driven by specific business application needs such as online transaction processing, LAN-free backup and high availability clustering. And, while localized SAN "islands" have provided solutions for these application needs, the absence of long-distance connectivity capabilities have posed a barrier for large enterprises and service providers that need to interconnect remote SAN islands for the purpose of data replication and restoration. While recent developments in Fibre Channel technology have enabled metropolitan area distances of up to 80 kilometers, solutions for WAN distances are still needed. The testing work between Gadzoox and CNT addresses this need through the use of ATM-based WANs as the interconnect between SAN islands.
"CNT is pleased to work with Gadzoox to test and deliver this certified solution to our respective customers," said Brian Larsen, Director of Product Management for Open Systems at CNT. "Gadzoox' highly scalable, high-performance switch products interoperate easily with CNT's UltraNet Open Systems Gateway, giving customer additional flexibility as they build and connect remote SAN sites."
"Gadzoox work with CNT underscores our commitment to provide innovative solutions that solve critical storage management problems for enterprise users and service providers," said Dave Tang, Gadzoox Networks vice president of marketing. "CNT's long-standing leadership in remote data center connectivity fills a critical need in driving the evolution of SAN capabilities. By providing an easy method for connecting SANs through existing wide area networks, the benefits of storage area networks can be more readily realized by businesses that rely on remote sites."
The Gadzoox Capellix switch and CNT UltraNet Open Systems Gateway have been certified for interoperability, verified in remote storage management application environments. Backup applications such as Veritas' NetBackup are supported by the certified solution. These products are currently available through the respective distribution channels of the companies.
