How Well Do You Know the Chip Business?

Quick! What company is the world's largest independent provider of semiconductor packaging and test services? Give up? Here's a hint -- it's headquartered in West Chester, Pa. Not a good hint, huh? The world leader is Amkor Technology and this week it solidified its position by taking over direct ownership of all of its packaging and test operations. In a deal worth $1.4 billion, Amkor picked up three semiconductor assembly and testing factories in South Korea from Anam Semiconductor and invested $459 million to increase its stake in Anam's silicon foundry business from 19% to 43%.

The fab, located in Buchon, South Korea, will be cranking out 25,000 eight-inch wafers per month by the third quarter. Amkor now owns seven chip-assembly and testing factories with more than 3.5 million square feet of manufacturing space and an additional 1 million for future expansion. These seven plants packaged 1.4 billion semiconductors in 1999, or about 6% of the world's supply, according to Amkor.
