Margaret, the King James version translation is "Thou shalt not kill", but the actual meaning of the phrase from Hebrew to English is "You shall not murder", and this has been changed in later translations, such as the New International Version. This allows killing during war or self-defense, and killing of plants and animals. Otherwise it is an unworkable commandment.

The original Hebrew word is "ratsach" and the translation is "to kill a human being, especially to murder".
