Hi Dave B, (memory prices)

(I was lurking here, and couldn't resist my 2c, regardless of what I said before about not stepping in where lawyers are treading. The curse of itchy kbd fingers and a chatty nature)

I looked at the pages below:
commerce.us.dell.com
(1) DRDRAM (PC800!)

and

commerce.us.dell.com
(1) SDRAM (PC100?)

to get a rough idea of how much the memory component prices are.

By playing around with the memory upgrade options, here's what I get from basic Algebra :

DRDRAM RIMM
64MB $297 (part of system)
128MB $486
256MB $998

SDRAM DIMM
64MB $99 (part of system)
128MB $198 [bad deal - MUCH cheaper online]
256MB $458

Of course, the above is not a fair comparison since the SDR system looks like it is PC-100, and the upcoming i815 takes PC-133 SDR (but when I last checked, the PC-133 SDR is < 10% premium over PC-100 retail in the clone shops).

While the price of the RDRAM modules are not as high as I last looked, they are still a hefty premium. (You can run windows with 64MB of ram, but your swap file will grow very very big before you even finish booting up, the thing really needs 128MB for normal work. 256MB+ for video editing).

Addendum : link below for kingston memory shows 128MB PC133 SDR @ 152.95.

EDIT: PC100-SDR is 115.95 from same place.
