David--
Judging by the following article, CDMA seems to be taking root in Japan (China, of course, is a slightly tougher nut to crack). Care to compare these numbers to Japan's booming TDMA market?
I wouldn't lose too much sleep over those grannies' financial welfare in the long run. (Unless they happen to be trading short term--in that case, shame on them.)
Tokyo, April 17, 2000 -- Subscribers to the new "cdmaOne" digital mobile phone service offered by DDI Corp.'s cellular units and cell phone operator IDO Corp. surpassed five million as of Saturday, the two companies said Monday.
The DDI-IDO alliance has set its subscriber target at 10 million at the end of March 2001.
The cdmaOne service started in July 1998 in the Kansai, Kyushu and Okinawa areas, and extended nationwide by April 1999. Its good sound quality attracted one million subscribers by May 1999. With the addition of Internet access capabilities to the service, subscribers are now increasing by 400,000-500,000 monthly, officials of the companies said.
