Re: I got a brother who works at Sequent, which IBM bought, presumably somewhat for their IA64 multiprocessor.

Dan,
I wouldn't doubt that. There's no question that a few years ago IBM was definately looking forward to getting their processor solution from INTC. The old timers I talk to seem to think that if Merced would have come out on time, POWER3-II would have been discontinued. There's no question that INTC blew a huge opportunity to be IBM's server processor supplier by the countless utter failures involved with IA64.

Now what? IBM has moved to copper and has a far superior processor. It would be very hard to move to IA64 now. IBM would be giving up the 2-3 year lead in technology they enjoy over SUNW. It just wouldn't make any sense.

Which brings up the point again, why are we developing a SMP board for IA64? There's 2 possibilities here. 1) Someone knows something we don't. 2) The people making this decision at IBM are clearly incompetent.
