Random musings......and Globalstar
This thread, my fave, has been in a funk with the market. Lots of talk around SI and by Cramer that this year now most resembles 1994, which was apparently typified by numerous interest rate hikes and a dead market. If true, and right now it's hard to dispute, this year may represent a good investing opportunity to load up on the companies we most especially covet.
Because of the funk, I'm going to try to generate discussion periodically based on the recent Portfolio Survey. I'll invite selected posters to discuss their choices and rationale.
Globalstar.........touted by Gilder the 'Visionary', and by Maurice Winn. Maurice came onto this thread last year, around summer or so, and encouraged we get in. Gilder pushed it some more. I started following the company in May/June and for the rest of last year. They have competitive advantage with a low earth orbit constellation of satellites, using CDMA technology, for wireless telecommunications. I watched the stock price go from $17 to $45/share, or so. Today, it's about $10/share.
Lots of Buffet memories on the thread. When I studied Buffet a couple of years ago, the one Buffet conviction I took home was the importance of quality management. How can Globalstar, as the sole survivor of a potentially important segment (satellite) in an exploding industry (wireless telecommunications) be in such a funk, especially with Gilder pumping it????????
Inept Management......and loss of faith by the faithful.

Best case scenario: Globalstar revenues lift off, but much more slowly than anyone ever anticipated. It gets back to management, its vision, and its ability to execute the vision.
MtnLady, where are you? I recall you recently getting in on Globalstar because it was inexpensive. A case of catching a falling knife, which we've all done at times.
MtnLady, what's your take on Globalstar?
