Dow Jones Online News, 05/9/2000 03:28
AMSTERDAM -(Dow Jones)- Dutch fiber optic network builder KPNQwest NV (KQIP) said Monday that it had set a new speed record for transmitting data, and for transmitting data using the Internet Protocol, or IP.
"This is not only a technological breakthrough, but also a powerful signal that European businesses and institutions will be uniquely positioned to migrate to the fastest, most efficient and most secure e-commerce future," KPNQwest said in release.
The company said that, using a new fiber optic platform designed by Alcatel Alsthom SA (ALA) of France and routers built by U.S.-based Juniper Networks Inc. (JNPR), the company had transmitted data packets at a rate of 40 gigabits per second on a round trip of 160 km.
The speed is four times faster than the fastest existing fiber optic networks in the world, KPNQwest said. - - 09/05/00 07-13G
