Selling short "against" an option is illegal. Selling short and owning options at the same time is legal. You can not use an option for margin. If your broker "knows" you have them however he may be a lot more "comfortable" giving you a "relaxed" margin :-} Also - I may be long a stock that my wife is short - it's a free country.
