Hayes UK Ships 56Kbps Modems - First Vendor In UK

Source: Newsbytes

FLEET, HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND, Newsbytes via Individual Inc. :
Hayes has apparently pipped US Robotics and all other modem
vendors in Europe by announcing the shipment this week of its 56
kilobits-per-second (Kbps) modems.

The Accura 56k PC internal speakerphone costs UKP143.83. Plans
call for the desktop version of the modem to ship in 14 days at a
UKP160.85 price point.

According to Bill Pechey, technical director with Hayes Europe, the
PC internal modems are shipping now in the UK and Hayes' own
tests suggest that 56,000 bits- per-second (bps) performance is
achievable on most comms links. "Their performance is very
impressive," he told Newsbytes.

Anne Mitchell, meanwhile, a spokesperson for the company's UK
operation, told Newsbytes that volume shipments of the Accura 56k,
which conforms to the Rockwell-Lucent k56flex standard, are being
made this week to retail outlets across the UK. The shipments are
honoring the company's commitment made earlier this year to ship
by the end of May, Newsbytes notes.

Nigel Croisdale, Hayes Europe's director, said that, in addition to
utilizing K56flex technology, which according to Dataquest will be
supported by more than 75 percent of remote access servers used
by Internet service providers (ISPs) and corporations, "Hayes'
modems offer value for money, high-performance reliability and 100
percent compatibility.

"We're therefore confident that there is only one choice for customers
who want to download information from the Internet at high speeds,
and that is to buy Hayes Accura 56K modems," he enthused.

Hayes claims that, because Hayes committed to the K56flex
specification earlier than other modem manufacturers, the company's
engineers, working in close collaboration with their counterparts at
Rockwell and Lucent, have conducted extensive testing of the
k56flex products for several months.

Newsbytes notes that k56flex is being supported by several major
ISPs in the UK, including AOL, CompuServe, UUNet Pipex, and BT
Internet. Hayes claims that companies committed to the k56flex
technology to date represent more than 70 percent of the modem
communications industry, reaching more than 12 million Internet
subscribers worldwide.

Users with existing modems can take advantage of Hayes 56K
upgrade program. As reported previously by Newsbytes, Hayes is
offering 56k modem upgrades from as little as UKP99, including
sales tax (VAT) shipping and handling. Details of Hayes' 56k
upgrade policy are posted on the company's Web Site at
hayes.co.uk .
