Everything you wanted to know about Supercomputer performance (at least on LINPACK) but were afraid to ask... netlib.org This is based on submissions in Nov. 1996, and is update Jun/Nov. Note that SGI/Cray have the greatest number of systems on the list. Data points (right hand number is LINPACK "rmax" peak performance value) Fastest Cray: #8 Cray T3D MC1024-8 100500 Fastest IBM: #14 IBM SP2/512 88400 Fastest SGI: #86 POWER CHALLENGEarray 18455 96 proc. Fastest O2000 (in Nov, remember) #211 SGI Origin 2000 8757 using 32 proc. Note that the "slowest" system on this list is a mere 18 processor Power Challenge. #500 SGI POWER CHALLENGE 4620 18 proc To put the number into some perspect, here are the rmax number as a percentile of the Top500 # p'tile Rmax 51 (10%) < 5000 238 (48%) < 7500 308 (60%) <10000 385 (77%) <15000 417 (83%) <20000 446 (89%) <30000 461 (92%) <40000 485 (97%) <80000 Note that O2000 at 32 procs covers half the market. The older PowerChallenge pushes that to ~80% Assuming near linear scaling to 128 procs the O2000 should cover 90%. In this market (except for vs. dumping) the SGI/Crays show very nice price/performance as well. I think being a "volume supercomputer" (boy is THAT an oxymoron) company has been pretty good for SGI. NOW they'll push into the Enterprise and the Web like never before.
