JC - you're right, MSFT will never offer any meaningful middleware to support a meta-layer, SUNW already has it locked up. JAVA is it. MSFT will continue to drive their 1980s standards until no one cares about it. The meta-layer will be a UNIX derivative.

Or maybe when the meta-layer definitions don't turn out to favor any current network or storage architecture, and Java as well as current middleware from other vendors turns out to be insufficient, then the game will be wide open again... If you think MSFT's strategy is based on VB you have not been following what they are doing, and if you think there is enough momentum behind JAVA centric architectures to say that will be the winner, you are not looking at the problem.
