IRVINE, Calif., May 9, 2000 -- Quantum/ATL (NYSE: DSS), a leading supplier of intelligent DLTtape(TM) automation for networked computers, Tuesday announced its Filer SAN Solution (FSS), an integrated NAS and SAN data protection solution for Network Appliance(TM) filers.
ATL has joined forces with Network Appliance Inc. (Nasdaq:NTAP), a leader in network file serving and caching, and Vixel Corp. (Nasdaq: VIXL), a leading provider of Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions, to deliver an integrated backup/restore solution for NetApp(R) filer customers.
The solution uses SAN technology to provide a powerful backup and recovery solution for Network Appliance filers, thereby integrating NAS and SAN technologies. The solution is a Fibre Channel SAN-based shared tape library system that supports Network Appliance filers, managed by enterprise data storage software from Veritas and Legato.
It delivers new levels of performance as well as availability and improved manageability to NetApp filer customers seeking increased, LAN-free tape backup and sharing of tape resources. The solution's infrastructure removes the backup traffic from the LAN, eliminating the performance impacts on end users and applications caused by typical LAN-based backup operations.
Connectivity dramatically increases as libraries are now shared across the SAN.
The Fibre Channel-based system, which connects NetApp filers directly to ATL libraries through a Fibre Channel switch, offers a high-performance, affordable and scalable solution that is installed and supported by ATL. The resulting storage system will reduce administration requirements and increase the efficiency of data backup and recovery in the fastest-growing NetApp filer environments.
ATL will make available all necessary hardware except the NetApp filer. ATL's world-class customer support organization will provide a single point of contact for all technical support, configuration and installation for the complete backup solution.
"This integrated solution enables Network Appliance customers to exploit the full potential of network-attached primary storage with complete data protection and effectively blurs the lines of distinction between NAS and SAN," said Neal Waddington, chief operating officer at ATL.
"Backup of large volumes of data represents significant management challenges, and the ability to connect filers to SAN-based tape libraries solves customers' concerns about data availability and protection," said Mark Santora, vice president of marketing for Network Appliance.
"Vixel's Fabric Switch provides the robust connectivity required for multiple filers to share backup resources in a highly efficient manner," said Arun Taneja, vice president, marketing, Vixel Corp. "Vixel's scalable, flexible and reliable switch technology ensures a high performance backup solution for Network Appliance customers."
