That's a heck of a lot for the period March 1991 to present, considering Nakamura had to push them to do it in the first place! In the US, however, only 15 have been issued with the earliest coming in March 1994. Perhaps only the most significant ones were filed here. Despite what Nakamura said in the interview, there are some apparatus patents. This one is interesting in that it suggests the mechanism by which the two-flow design improves results: US Patent 5,334,277 issued 08/02/94 to Nakamura, Method of vapor-growing semiconductor crystal and apparatus for vapor-growing the same patents.ibm.com I don't know which particular patents Nichia claims have been infringed in their lawsuits filed in Japan.
