The problem with states of mind is that they are very subject to change. They are emotionally-induced, labile, subject to influences of all kinds. Young people do not yet have the ability to understand all this; indeed, many adults still have problems with this. A ceremonial marriage is only as meaningful as we make it. Without the state of mind, it too is a sham. Ideally we should have it all.

I can't agree with you that the "act of sex" is a celebration. Alone, it is merely the filling of a physiological need. When coupled with friendship and caring, it becomes enjoyable. When total trust, commitment, and love all come together, then we no longer have the act of sex, we have the act of love and that's worth celebrating.
