The 1.3nm WWDM optical chip that Lumenon talks about is a completely different device then the 8 channel DWDM. You cannot compare the two and say that if the 1.3nm WWDM has an insertion loss of less than 5dB then the 8 channel DWDM has an insertion loss of less than 5dB. The two devices work with different design principals and operate at different wavelengths so you cannot take one and compare it to the other.
Sol Gel has had a known problem at the 1.5nm wavelength used for DWDM's which are the residual C-H and O-H chemical bonds. These chemical bonds absorb light at the 1.5nm wavelength but not at the 1.3nm wavelength. This is one of the reasons that polymer and Sol Gel optical chips have had high insertion loss at the 1.5nm wavelengths used for telecommunications and not made it onto the market.
However my answer to Fiberhound, Don, and DDS is all of this is techno babble on both sides. This still all just points to the problem with the public trying to evaluate the viability of a new technology with pre revenue development stage companies. Usually by the time a company becomes public, sales have been made and the basic technology has been proven to work enough to get some sales. A few points:
a) Sol Gel has been worked on for years by many people and companies in hopes of commercialization for telecom devices. It has not worked for many reasons one of which is outlined above. No technologist would ever say it is impossible only that it has not yet been done and there are many technical hurdles to overcome.
b) If Lumenon can ship some DWDM chips (at 1.5nm of course) and make some sales they will have proven all the experts wrong and be a tremendous success.
I actually would like Lumenon to succeed with Sol Gel since everyone in optics could then get very cheap optical chips. It would be a great advantage to the company I work for. But I will wait to see some evidence before I believe it is possible. My initial motivation on writing about Lumenon is I believe they should come clean with their investors on the status of their technology rather than hyping the next new product under development. And the management should not take their investors money, sell out and become multimillionaires without ever having shipped a single dollar of revenue. They are probably out buying new cars and houses instead of trying to make Sol Gel work.
