I met him once, at a conference called Second Thoughts on Race in America, put on by Peter Collier and David Horowitz, under the aegis of the National Forum Foundation. He gave a powerful speech about how we do not do African- Americans any good by treating them as perpetual children, and exempting them from universal standards. We talked for awhile, and I was impressed with his intelligence and intensity. I also staked him a few cigarettes (I had not yet quit), as we were both Camel men<VBG>.....Let me see, can I recall the trouble at the New Yorker? I am having some difficulty remembering that specifically. There have been so many fracases over the years......I will try to remember, and if I do, get back to you.......
