from ... WINDOWS INSIDER by Valerie Ryan "POCKET PC DEBUTS The Pocket PC recently made its debut at New York City's Grand Central Station as Microsoft announced immediate availability of devices from HP, Casio, Compaq, and Symbol Technologies. In case you missed previous tips on the subject, these Windows-powered PDAs sport a revamped version of the Windows CE operating system. They also include Pocket versions of Word, Excel, Money, Outlook, Internet Explorer, an updated Windows Media Player, and Microsoft Reader.
Microsoft is hoping to win back some of the handheld market share currently dominated by Palm devices. "It's an amazing time in mobile computing, and we're just getting started," said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "Technology is innovating at a rapid pace, and the Pocket PC is a great example of how, today, we are bringing the productivity, performance, and power of a PC in a pocket-sized device to enable true any-time, anywhere access to information."
Palm's response? "It's not about faster performance, it's not about cramming as much as you can into the device. Fundamentally, our customers want us to help them deliver solutions that are unlike a PC," said Palm President Alan Kessler at the recent Spring Comdex. "Extremely reliable, wearable, and simple to use."
And they're off." |
