Inktomi Enhances Network Infrastructure Technology to Streamline Delivery of Internet Content
BUSINESS WIRE - May 10, 2000 13:36
FOSTER CITY, Calif., May 10, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Inktomi Traffic Server(R) 3.5 and Content Delivery Suite 3.5 Provide Expanded Edge Services Functionality to Leading Service Providers and Enterprise Networks

Inktomi Corp. (NASDAQ: INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced the availability of the 3.5 versions of its Traffic Server network cache platform and Content Delivery Suite (CDS) distribution and management software. The upgraded products add new features that support both enterprise and carrier-class networks, including improved delivery of rich content types such as streaming media and applications, directory support for enterprise networks and customized logging capabilities for hosting and content delivery network providers.

Inktomi's industry-leading content delivery infrastructure, is currently deployed by eight of the top nine Content Delivery Networks as well as by hundreds of service provider and enterprise customers including AOL, British Telecom, Cable & Wireless, Digital Island, Enron, Excite@Home, Exodus, Genuity, Mirror Image, and NTL.

Traffic Server 3.5 - Enhanced Features to Authenticate, Track End-Users

Traffic Server 3.5 extends the Inktomi network cache platform with important enterprise functionality and advanced security and reporting capabilities. Service providers will now be able to provide their customers individualized end-user reporting on user hits to the Traffic Server cache through advanced, customizable logging features. Traffic Server 3.5 and CDS 3.5 together provide the distributed log collection capabilities needed by service providers in order to effectively monitor and report on site usage to their customers.

The growing popularity of caching in the enterprise for scalability and intelligent network services has created new requirements for security and authentication capabilities. Traffic Server 3.5 now provides LDAP support, enabling enterprises to authenticate users at the cache, as well as split DNS support, delivering extra security, speed and flexibility for the enterprise network that must support users both inside and outside the firewall.

Content Delivery Suite 3.5 - Streamlining Distribution of Complex Content

Content Delivery Suite 3.5 has added features for moving complex content to the edge of Internet and intranet networks while improving network performance and end-user quality of service. Improved functionality for application distribution enables the edge deployment of applications that previously had to run from a centralized origin server. A new content collection feature also supports edge application deployment, by enabling the real-time centralization of data collected from edge servers and caches deployed worldwide. This content collection feature enables e-businesses to effectively monitor and manage their sites while deploying their premium content close to the end user.

Content Delivery Suite 3.5 also supports the pre-load of audio and video content into the Traffic Server Media-IXT streaming media cache, enabling more effective, scheduled distribution of streaming content and the prevention of performance problems resulting from flash crowds.

"Inktomi is helping us simplify the complex processes required for the edge deployment of content and applications," said Tim Wilson, vice president of marketing at Digital Island. "We pride ourselves in meeting and anticipating our customers' content distribution needs, and Inktomi Traffic Server and Content Delivery Suite 3.5 continue the innovative tradition behind all of Inktomi's products by providing unique edge functionality that streamlines the most challenging content distribution processes."

"Inktomi consistently works to enhance the functionality of our products with innovative new features for the enterprise and service provider markets," said Vince Vannelli, senior vice president and general manager, Inktomi Network Products. "As the leading infrastructure supplier to the world's largest networks, Inktomi enables the most advanced edge services available today."
