"High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) for DVI Another interesting digital display interconnect technology is High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) technology for DVI. HDCP was introduced recently by Silicon Image. HDCP allows DVI outputs to be securely transmitted between a digital video host (PC, DVD) and a digital display device (TV, monitor, projector) without risk of copying. HDCP consists of a hardware-based technology for authentication, encryption and renewability. Bandwidth is scalable up to 5 Gbps. Initial applications of HDCP technology include a variety of digital consumer electronics devices. JVC recently announced that it plans ship a digital VHS player with HDCP. HDCP enables the secure transmission of digital data in devices such as DVD players, digital VCRs, HDTVs, and set-top boxes. Major entertainment companies, including Fox, Warner Brothers, and The Walt Disney Company, have endorsed HDCP. We believe that the emergence of HDCP will enable more digital content transmission to CE markets. Silicon Image?s transmitter and receiver products allow HDCP-based digital video transmission into consumer devices such as set-top boxes, and we believe that we are at the cusp of broad-based market acceptance for DVI-based digital CRTs, HDTVs, and set-top boxes. We believe that digital display interconnect technologies are important precursors to the broad availability of digital content. With standard specifications like DVI and HDCP, we believe that the manufacturers of both host systems and displays will be able to produce products without confusion about compatibility or potentially conflicting proprietary technologies. We believe that these sorts of problems have stalled flat-panel digital display products in the past. We believe that we are only now beginning to see the ramp of flat-panel and digital display products as a result of industry adoption of key specifications."
