Jim,
I don't know if you remember but I was really taken back learning that Solano ws only a trumped up i810 and not a 133 MHZ BX chipset...and about it's slow release.
THat's what the original plan might have been. I guess Intel planned that 820 would really be the replacement for BX, and 815 would be for low end. The first design of 815 was scrapped, and now we are up to the second design, which really will be a 133 MHz BX.
I think Intel's primary objective is to corner the market. But most of the tools to do so have exploded in their face. I wouldn't be surprised if the decision not to license Willy bus also exploded in their face. The same about the recent decision to try to corner the motherboard market, once again (as per the Intel's statement that they plan to ship 80% of motherboards for the Intel chips)
Suppose that the primary chipset for Will has err... errata. What will happen to Willy?
There has been a lot of bitching about AMD's infrastructure, but compared to Intel, AMD will be very diversified, with chipsets coming from AMD, Via, SiS, Ali, Api, Micron. Compare that to Intel chipsets only from Intel, and Serverworks for the servers.
BTW...Louis Burns should be shown the front door...
I like him right where he is <g>
