(A) Like SDRAMs, RDRAMs experience a temperature rise as more bandwidth is being pulled out of the memory system. However, it may come as a surprise to you that RIMMs can provide twice the bandwidth at half the power of DIMMs. The heat spreader serves two functions: Unlike DIMMs where power is dissipated evenly among all devices, RIMMs can have power localized to one device. The heat spreader serves to spread heat across all devices along the RIMM module. The second function is device protection during shipping and installation. As further evidence that heat is not an issue, the major OEMs ship RDRAM-based systems without any dedicated cooling for the RIMMs, and these systems achieve the highest scores in benchmark tests. ---------------------------------------------------------- For more information read the link in post #41810.
