GaN on sapphire ain't dead yet. Nichia seems to be doing OK with it. I'm not aware of any GaN LEDs that are brighter than Nichia's

the problem with GaN on sapphire for white is...
too expensive...3x SiC
the leads are on one end....requires special packaging
much larger than SiC

the good is they can be brighter...however the very high bright market is very small...at least so far.

note that cree's recent acquisition of nitres...has them saying they now have the brightest at the lowest price.

japanese companies are famous for supporting each other....interesting that cree recently got 2 design wins in nichia's backyard...the new sony playstation and panasonic cell phone use cree leds. nokia's latest cell phone uses cree leds also.
