Hey Joe
<< I am hoping someone out there will tell me I am totally wrong about Cisco's interest in Data Center SANs. That CISCO is only connecting FC SANs with the 10GB Ethernet. Based on the Qlogic conference call, FC still has a 4 year lead over ethernet in the SAN. But time is ticking. >>
Joe, i may be way off but Cisco getting more involved in data centers, etc... is a good thing for storage and that means, good things for the storage Gorilla EMC and others (SUNW, HP, HDS, IBM, MTIC, ADIC, etc...). Like I have said before, EMC, not CSCO is the storage Gorilla and they are going with FC not GE at the moment. What happens from here in the next few years is kind of written in stone, not SANdcastle moats. ;-)
CSCO still needs their LAN and WAN technologies to get into new data storage centers regardless, and of course they will use a form of Ethernet for managing and delivering IP data traffic there. This is different from using SANs, which they will most likely connect to. Now, on the issue of using IP over SCSI, for storage...this is a different and more complex issue, imo. One of the interesting things about Qlogic is that they seem protected for whichever way we may go years out...thier SCSI revs are still growing strongly and they are also involved in FC and IB of course.
Looking at the charts on CSCO and EMC over the past years, I have often been left to wonder if the LAN Gorilla will HAVE to merge someday with the storage one...but what do i know...i'm just but a pigboy... |
