So far I have only seen The Register pointing at the real source of all this INTC problems.
They just have to much money and they start acting like a venture capitalist. There is no problem with that, unless you start mixing up your core business with the investment business.

First they do an investment in a small start-up, than they use their market position to push the technology to the market. And that, my friends, is the real cause of this problems. They no longer choose a technology on his technologic merits, but on financial ones. I can imagine there are hundreds of engineers at Intel now saying "I told it, but you didn't listen"

On top of that, there was also the thread from AMD. A normal introduction of a new technology always comes in on the high end. After that it softly shifts in to the mainstream, giving the market some time to adapt to the new standards. This Rambus introduction is way to offensive. It's a dictate, from a dictator who doesn't care about obvious things like prices, availability, market penetration, installed base, etc... We decided it, and you are going to swallow it.

It's incredible those high shot managers all make the same mistakes. They never seem to learn from historical mistakes like microchannel, etc... This Rambus saga will definitely be one for the history books.
