Quadad, I have had better luck placing orders within the spread with Datek than with any other broker.

There is one caveat, though, which may explain why we have such different results: this will only work on heavily-traded stocks. Any stock that is being heavily-traded today will almost always work. But, if a stock is thinly-traded, there just isn't going to be anybody on Island to take your order. A market-maker may or may not mosey on by and may or may not be interested in splitting the spread.

On INTC, INTCW, CSCO, etc. (as well as whatever the hot stocks of the day are) you should almost always be able to split the spread within one minute, and it's not unsual to buy at the bid, sell at the offer.
