THanks for the info Rande!! Interesting stuff. You speak from the perspective of being in the US whereas I speak from the perspective of being outside the US. Things are definitely progressing faster in the US.

I believe the model you speak about in your post is very viable although I would question the economics of broadcasting like this versus traditional means which are a lot cheaper.

You make a very compelling argument and definitely see viability in the model you speak about given the technological progress being made in your "neighbourhood". If the infrastructure you speak about is in place within 2-3 years than I would agree that in 5 years time direct digital broadcasting will be widespread (although I don't believe dominant).

You speak however about one segment in the music industry and that is broadcasting. I still believe there will be a place for purchasable, storable and portable music for which MP3 (or some other open digital music standard) will be ideally suited.

And as for no one remembering MP3, don't forget that people are still using their "old" turn tables to play the records they may have bought in the 60's. My mother still has some great Berlin Philharmonic albums from that era which I would not like to throw out. Don't underestimate the inertia of consumers and the value they place on products bought yesteryear. I don't believe we will become a completely disposable society.

It's certainly an interesting area to watch.
