Samsung Selects SVG's ProCell for Next-Generation Product Development

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 11, 2000--Following on the heels of the previously announced 193 nm Micrascan lithography system order from Samsung, Silicon Valley Group (Nasdaq:SVGI - news) announced shipment of its ProCell(TM) deep ultraviolet (DUV) coat/develop system to Samsung for production of advanced future products.

``The cluster design of ProCell offers great promise in many areas, but the most important is in wafer handling, where significant improvement in timing control can both increase throughput and improve critical dimension (CD) control,'' said Jae Park, vice president of engineering for SVG. ``Samsung will be able to capitalize on these opportunities, especially the productivity and CD control achieved with the ProCell.''

As part of the program, Samsung will utilize SVG's newly developed thermal and spin modules that improve not only process uniformity but also process latitude. This new approach tightens CD control for advanced deep ultraviolet lithography production.

``Samsung's commitment to moving technology forward is evident in their decision to form a relationship with SVG to use the ProCell,'' said Boris Lipkin, SVG Track Systems president. ``This program is a good opportunity for SVG to position ProCell in the demanding DRAM market, and for Samsung to impact its product developments. Taking the tool now allows Samsung to get a head start in implementing its advantages.''

``Recent orders from the region clearly demonstrate the confidence the world's leading DRAM manufacturers have in SVG's products,'' said Papken Der Torossian, SVG chairman and CEO. ``SVG is pleased that ProCell has been selected by Samsung, a company that not only advances technology, but has the ability to assist in ProCell's commercialization in large volumes.''
