FTC Approves Pacts Settling Music Price Probe
dailynews.yahoo.com
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday approved settlements with
major music companies to curb pacts restricting stores from advertising discounted compact discs.

The move is designed to open up competition in the market for recorded music, and could lead to the price of
some CDs and other recorded music dropping by several dollars at many U.S. retail outlets.

FTC Chairman Robert Pitofsky said consumers had overpaid $500 million for CDs over a
2 1/2 year period.

``These settlements... should help restore much needed competition to the retail music
market, consisting of $15 billion in annual sales,'' Pitofsky said in a statement. ''Today's
news should be sweet music to the ears of all CD purchasers.''
