That's pretty much how I've always looked at it. But I don't believe it makes sense to continue to rely exclusively on ST capital gains for my livelihood, as I have these past two years. And theoretically, at least, a good dividend provides a floor for a good stock in a down market.

I always thought that the sort of balanced portfolio financial planners preach was bunk. Now I'm at least willing to explore the concept.
