I am of the view that either construct is equally valid. In the first, you're implicitly referencing all the assets of the company -- this is very similar to saying

o India are a better team than Mexico in cricket [reference to all Indian team players]
o The English (or equivalently, England) are past masters at international diplomacy [here, you refer to the English diplomatic corps].
o The KGB were feared opponents of the CIA.

In all such cases, the relevant noun is, pedantically speaking, singular when considered alone - however, the context of the sentence in which the noun is used permits a more liberal usage of tense.
