China Exchange Regulator Dies
By CHARLES HUTZLER, Associated Press Writer

BEIJING (AP) - China's top foreign exchange regulator has died, a Chinese official confirmed today, amid Hong Kong media reports that he committed suicide either out of worries about his health or a corruption scandal.

Hong Kong's Ming Pao newspaper reported that Li Fuxiang, director of China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange, was admitted to a Beijing hospital and died Wednesday after jumping from the seventh floor.

An official in the administration's information office said Li had died. But the official, who would only give her surname, Deng, refused to provide additional information, saying she was awaiting instructions from superiors on reporting the death.(cont)
