John:
I was trying to understand why Intel would risk sales of 820 chipsets sales and at least $100 M in money.
I finally understood the real reasons. Intel really doesn't have a serious problem with 820 MTH. The only serious problem was the Taiwanese vendors were producing almost 100% of 820 based system boards with SDRAM MTH.
How can you champion RDRAM while no third parties are making 820 chispet computers with RDRAM. So you announce that there is small problem with MTH that may be observed under extreme conditions.
The end result is Intel announces that no more 820 motherboards with MTH's should be built. Taiwanese vendors take a bath in 820 chipset motherboards that no one will now want. An end user with working 820 SDRAM computer is not going to give it up for nebulous replacement technology. Small minority of end users who complain get 810 or 815 motherboard and lose use of their system for a while. Dell continues to sells at a nice profit all the RDRAM that Samsung produces even if it is not in any significant amounts now.
