CSCO will attack optical networking from the edge where they are strong-
It's still the data guys (enterprise networks) versus the voice guys (backbone service networks) and CSCO is still the data leader. CIEN is probably more aligned with the voice guys. At any rate, the collision is at the edge. So far, the data guys have been winning and CSCO is well positioned. Their biggest problems now are (1) the backbone service networks are still dominated by the voice guys with 99.99999 mentality and (2) time to market with metro DWDM. In this case, CSCO is still arranging desks in an international setting such as mentioned in this mornings announcement...
"Qeyton Systems optical technology will be seamlessly integrated with optical products and technology in Cisco's Optical Networking Solutions (ONS) 15000 family of products and will become part of Cisco's current optical networking group, within the service provider line of business. Qeyton Systems was founded in 1998. The 52 employees located in Stockholm will continue to operate in Stockholm and will be led by Claes Rickeby, the current CEO of Qeyton, and will report to Geraint Anderson, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Photonics Business Unit."
CIEN does not have these issues and if 10GB Ethernet over OC-192 is going to be the common demoninator for metro networks, then CSCO's strong data pedigree is not going to be much help as Ethernet has become as standarized as POTS and is a data commodity. CIEN is well positioned to get more than their share of this huge opportunity. If CIEN does not stumble, then the CIEN rocket ship will continue to gain warp speed.
