LOUDON, N.H. -- Adam Petty, the fourth-generation driver of NASCAR's first family of racing, died Friday after crashing during a practice lap at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Petty, 19, was airlifted to a hospital where he died of head trauma, spokeswoman Jennifer Dearborn said.

Petty crashed shortly after noon during practice for Friday afternoon's qualifying in the Busch Grand National series.

Petty is the grandson of the seven-time NASCAR champion Richard Petty and the son of Kyle Petty, a regular on the Winston Cup circuit. Adam's great grandfather was Lee Petty, one of the pioneers of NASCAR.

Drivers were qualifying Friday for the Busch 200, to be contested Saturday on the 1.058-mile oval.
