Ticklish Tiger re: Alcatel The personels of the acquired usually can't cope with the heavy-handed approach of ALA, ie. parachute in one of ALA colonial officers to run the acquired unit.
In the case of ALA/NN you are dead wrong!!!. after merger, Newbridge will be run INDEPENDENTLY form ALA European operations by Pearse Flynn, current president of NN who brought NN's European operations last year within 10 months to state of excellence (growth near 50%) and now is doing fantastic job in North America. Newbridge will absorb DSC Comm. operation too. Combined unit(Carrier Internetworking Division) will run IP/ATM, xDSL, LMDS ect. in N.American spirit. I know few engineers and I am aware the many key personnel stays!
Newbridge problems was not technology but execution. Now they have right man (Flynn) and with ALA ritgh critical mass. Where NT got its optical story Optera. From NN for nothing (Cambrian 300 millions, fall 98) Who brought first core LMDS and is sitting on 50% wins so far awarded-NN. Who is selling(lunch in the mid of 1998) first commercially TV , Video over copper wire (3DSL) to Kingsom Comm, New Edge and ATT Conada-all multihundred million dollars deals. Not to mention 50gig( now at BT, SBC, C&W, MCI and later this year 450 gig IP/ATM switch -router with OC-192 -Pronto Project, which scales to 5 TBit. With ALA execution problems go away. Watch out.
