Yogi, I don't know that I feel sorry for them either, but I think it's important to try to understand the perspectives of the various players in this saga before judging them so harshly.

People operate within cultures. The DEA has a culture. People tend to gravitate toward certain lines of work based on their interests and temperaments. Probably the agents who executed the removal of Elian spend most of their time with other DEA agents. They get certain training and follow certain policies and protocols. They go to cookouts together and they think a lot alike. For the most part, we operate in insular environments where our associates validate our commonality. The DEA operates the way the DEA operates. I'd bet it never occurred to the civil servants who were part of that operation that there might me anything unusual or inappropriate about it. They would be amazed that anyone would think them gutless for executing an operation in a traditional fashion and executing it effectively.

People operating within cultures are often surprised to discover that people outside their circles are repulsed by what seems normal to them. You play a basketball game in a different conference and find that the referees call the game differently. You go to a different community library and find that the people there hush you if you talk, or talk when you expect quiet.

I wouldn't suggest that you feel sorry for the DEA agents, only consider that their motivations might have been sincere and well intentioned within the context of their culture. If you feel blame is in order, I suggest you blame the system, not the people who operate in good faith within it.
