I don't think they know it, but Inprise is sitting on a gold mine with JBuilder. Only IBM's Websphere tools even comes close in the XML, Java and more importantly Java Server Pages markets. JSP with XML is truly the standard dynamic content engine of Internet development. The vast majority is still CGI scripts, but I'm talking about what is being created for release next year, not what's on the web right now.

Companies selling HTML editors have no chance to compete here. If Inprise developed an XML-based JSP editor that content developers could use JBuilder beans with, they would knock the socks of this industry. The barrier to entry for dynamic content tool makers is tremendous.

Inprise won't do it because they don't get it. They don't understand it. It's not like them to recognize a golden opportunity. They will wait to see what the market does (e.g., Application Server) and then jump in after the fact. In that way, there are a lot like Corel, albeit in totally different market spaces. In every other way, thank God they are nothing like Corel.

Let me finish by saying that a Borland executive claimed in 1997 that the Internet, or more accurately the Web, was a fad that would diminish over time, or words to that effect. That's the sort of leadership you don't need and I'm sorry to say that they degree to which they don't get it is unchanged in critical pockets of the company.
