I'm glad that you thought to call the fruit tree specialist at Virginia Tech. I should have thought of mentioning to call a hort person at a university or ag office. I have a few friends who work in the ag offices up here and they are very keen people with a lot of knowledge... and often under-utilized... sort of like Maytag repairmen... bored out of their trees.... My new cherry trees pulled through the winter OK. I have to say I'm a little surprised because I haven't had fabulous luck with some kinds of fruit trees, but perhaps THIS will be the time. I'm just debating whether to throw away some money on some hardy rhododendrons which have been advertised in a nursery flyer. They are rhodies that were developed at the Univ. of Helsinki and are supposed to be hardy to Zone 4 (we're Zone 5). There are 3 colours available. I'm tempted to just go ahead and see if they will grow here. However, I'm getting to the point where I hate being disappointed by plants that are "supposedly" hardy in our region, but that just croak during the first winter. However, I am telling myself that these might be different because they were developed in a place that's probably even colder than here... Things are looking quite nice around here although I'm sure that we're at least a month or so behind where your gardens would be at this time of the year. Very cool, wet spring here. Things are finally starting to grow... very suddenly... grass has had to be cut twice in the last week... However, I'm not complaining. Certainly better than snow any old day...
