To my mind, the best argument for the second amendment is its deterrent effect. In the absence of registration, any potential tyrant, and his agents, cannot as easily make an optimistic miscalculation of the costs of confiscation. Every household potentially harbors one or more guns, whether it actually does or not. Thus, even households that would have completely complied with any registration law, whether or not they own a gun, would help deter an attempt for absolute power.
