Steve or Thread- Has anyone thought about what will be reported in USD versus the EUR. Tough to do a yr/yr comparison using the greenback. Here's what they say about the top line in euros.
Alcatel reports a 42% increase in sales to EUR 6,124 million for first quarter 2000, compared with EUR 4,319 million in the first quarter 1999.
Today EUR 6,124 million converts to USD 5,626 million. And MS Investor reports Q1 1999 coming in at USD 5,433. So that would make it only a 4% increase in top line yr/yr(in USD).
I'm assuming, but did not verify, it has to do with the conversion factor. The euro has taken a bad beating over the last year and I think this would account for what will be a substantial difference in reporting when converted to USD versus a EUR yr/yr comparison. If anyone has already done the math, is my speculation correct or my math wrong? 4% vs 42% is a hefty difference.
Just something to think about when the figures are converted back to USD and you may wonder what is going on. Just one of the problems with investing USD in foreign companies. But on the flipside, when their currencies are weak, it certainly makes it easier for not only ALA, but also NN to sell product into the US markets. -MikeM(From Florida) |
