Del,
I wish that everyone on this list could experience the EV1 with NIMH batteries. I am now several months into my my fourth year with the EV1 and several months with the newer EV1 with NIMH. My wife and I also have a new Lexus a few months old that is used sometimes by my wife in her work. We can barely lock or unlock the windows and doors of the Lexus not because they are so complicated but because we never want to drive anything other than the NIMH EV1. and haven't gotten around to really learning the ins and outs of the ICE.
We loved the EV1 even with lead acid batteries but by the end of the lease we were not going to renew unless we could get the EV1 with NIMH. The lead acids were just too inconvenient in their limited range particularly when we moved further out of town. We were continually forced to find chargers and that charging infrastructure was a mess.
The NiMH is giving us between 120 and 140 miles per charge. We have never needed the public charging infrastructure. When we charge, it is basically to show that EVs are still here albeit, barely.
As most of you know I first thought that the advertising and marketing for the EVS were a complete failure but have since come to realize that from the point of view of the Auto Makers they have been totally successful. They have convinced the Press, the auto press, and the public that they have tried to sell the EVs and have been rejected by the public. MASTERFULL! The good news is that I don't think they have fooled the CARB (California Air resources Board). The job of discrediting them has already begun it will soon intensify.
My son who has a brand new Mercedes convertible will hardly step into it. He loves his EV1 with NIMH as much as I love mine.

Once again, I truly hope that all of you who would wish for an EV1 with NiMH could get one. In the meantime, I share my special experience with you.
