<<where are "all the people" promoting letting Elian decide on this thread? >>

Jon, I've been following this thread from the beginning. It's been discussed before. To no conclusion, I might add.

<<Are you saying that the welfare of the child should be sacrificed for the greater good???

I wouldn't say "sacrificed" but I do think this case needs to be decided in the context of all those other children, absolutely. If I were little Elian and I got to decide, a decision I probably would see as a choice between being with my papa and little brother and having lots and lots of toys and ice cream, and I grew up to find out that my choice contributed to a bunch of little American girls suffering genital mutilation in other countries, I couldn't live with the guilt. I absolutely think this case needs to be decided according to all applicable international agreements. The U.S. can't expect other countries to follow international agreements if it doesn't. It's irresponsible to for adults to put that burden on Elian.

Well before you shared your story with us it was obvious that you had some intense personal experience that shaped your thinking. I understand why you put such a priority on asking Elian. I'm just suggesting that, while that factor is prominent in your thinking, it's not the only factor to be considered.
