The mother kidnapped the child from the father- your father was dead and hadn't died trying to do anything in particular wiht you- so that messy question didn't arise in your case.

We don't KNOW that his mother would rather have him here alone with people that are only marginally related to him. She is dead and never mentioned her intentions to anyone. She expected to live and raise him herself. Would she have thought Juan's father the worse alternative to life here with strangers? We don't know. She was young and impressionable- she took a ridiculous risk with her young son that I find morally repugnant- just as I find parent's kidnapping their children repugnant.

His mother certainly was selfish enough to endanger her life to have him here with HER. Would she have sent him on a rickety barge alone to this country? I would guess not. SO she didn't want him here at any cost.
