At 7 you did not comprehend everything involving your custody. I understand your need to say that- I am sure your mother did her best- as she had every RIGHT to legally do. There is no way you could have understood the educational advantages you might have had- the opportunities for advancement outside of school, and the general opportunities of mixing with people who have all those same advantages. You could not possibly have comprehended the danger of your environment- and (imo) although you survived you made a bad decision. I think the irresponsibility of your mother is illustrated in her pushing an ADULT decision on you. But that is typical of alcoholic homes- the children are forced to parent the parent. Most people do NOT see that as the proper environment for a child.

Now, was she irresponsible enough to LEGALLY be forced to allow the state to choose (or allow the state to allow YOU to choose) against her wishes- no. There are lots of irresponsible parents around. I had some myself- and some children can flourish DESPITE the stupid decisions of their parents- but that does NOT make those cases exemplars of correct child rearing.
