Fidelity maintains a list of issues that require higher margin maintenance. ALSC is listed with 60% maintenance requirement, where premium stocks may be held with 35%. I assume that a concentrated situation would set a higher requirement.

The point is that even with a diversified portfolio, it might be preferable to invest in those issues that have a lower requirement because it allows you to maintain a larger pad (surplus) and insulates you from markets such as what we have been seeing.
