Here We Go, Again! FOREIGN FIRMS VYING FOR KOREAN
IMT-2000 MARKET

SEOUL, May 15, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Amidst growing debate on setting a technical standard for IMT-2000,
foreign companies are boosting their efforts to have Korea adopt their technology standards.

Ericsson Korea is to hold a symposium on IMT-2000 at a Seoul hotel Thursday to promote its latest technology.

Headquartered in Sweden, Ericsson possesses technologies for both asynchronous and synchronous communication methods
which it will emphasize at the gathering.

The local industry is debating on which method to choose as its standard.

Asynchronous communication method is used in 80 percent of the world, including Europe and Japan, and the other method in
North America.

As Korea seems to be leaning towards taking the asynchronous mode, Qualcomm of the United States is expected to step up its
efforts to have Korea adopt its technology. Qualcomm has been pressing Japan to adopt the synchronous mode,

If Korea decides to go with the majority, the synchronous mode market, chiefly controled by the U.S. firms, will be jeopardized.

Industry sources said Korean mobile communication market holds great significance in Asia, thus it can become a battle ground
for foreign companies to push for their technical methods.
