Papua New Guinea Pipeline To Fire Up Queensland Industry
The Australian Financial Review, May 15

Queensland will gain huge benefit from the proposed $A3.74bn Papua New Guinea (PNG)-Queensland gas pipeline. The contracts for the 3,200km natural gas pipeline from the southern highlands of PNG to Brisbane via Townsville and Gladstone will mean 5,000 immediate jobs in itself.

However, the real benefits will begin when the gas is flowing, estimated at late 2003 or early 2004. In areas like Townsville, relatively inefficient and unreliable coal-fire generators will give way to the cleaner and cheaper gas. A raft of new and expanded industries will be spawned, including Sun Metals' $A900m zinc refinery and Copper Refineries' $A230m expansion. Comalco's alumnina smelter will proceed with the availability of gas-generated power.

Pipeline project director, John Powell, says projects not even envisaged in 2000 will emerge when the gas is flowing. The environmental benefits will be significant. Special report - Energy.
