SAN JOSE, Calif., May 15, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- LinkAir(TM) Communications, based in Silicon Valley and Beijing, today announced their entrance into the wireless marketplace and introduced a new patented technology for next generation wireless telecom systems that increases network capacity, quality and coverage by up to 20 times that of existing digital standards. The new standard -- named LAS-CDMA(TM) (Large Area Synchronized Code Division Multiple Access) -- offers a quantum leap in technology, enabling wireless operators to better manage the expected exponential growth in wireless subscribers and the rapid expansion of mobile data services, especially wireless Internet.
Designed to be backwards compatible with all current 2G and 3G wireless standards, including W-CDMA, cdma2000, TD-SCDMA and GSM, LinkAir's LAS-CDMA technology will enable wireless operators to see a marked increase in revenues without having to make significant changes or additions to their current networks. And, by increasing data speeds from the current 14.4 Kbps up to 5.53 Mbps and providing a TDD mode -- the preferred technology for Internet services
-- LAS-CDMA will enable wireless handset and base station manufacturers to offer more efficient products to meet and exceed customer demand.
"Current wireless technology is not capable of addressing the needs of tomorrow," said Ting Zheng, LinkAir's CEO. "LinkAir's team of scientists and telecom visionaries, led by Professor Daoben Li -- one of the founders of CDMA-pooled their expertise in wireless telecommunications and developed a technology that takes both wireless voice and data capabilities to the next level and beyond."
LAS-CDMA Gains Early Acceptance
At LinkAir's China launch last month, the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry (MII) -- the organization that develops the strategy, policies and overall planning for the Chinese information industry -- officially stated their support for LAS-CDMA. This announcement followed the recent decision by the China Wireless Telecommunications Standards (CWTS) organization -- a division of the MII -- to form an ad hoc working group to develop technical specifications for LAS-CDMA, which is being defined as a new option for 3G networks in China.
"After thoroughly evaluating LinkAir's LAS-CDMA technology, MII fully supports the development and deployment of LAS-CDMA," said Xu Shuncheng, director general, science and technology, MII. "LAS-CDMA technology, developed in China, will help revolutionize the wireless industry and significantly accelerate the availability of wireless Internet."
MII joins a growing number of China's influential telecom organizations that also have voiced their support for LinkAir's LAS-CDMA technology.
China Unicom and China Mobile, two of China's leading wireless telecom service providers, both see the potential for LAS-CDMA to bring to market a standard that offers carriers far more enhancements in network performance than any current or proposed standard.
"We are seeking a solution that can allow an operator to offer high-speed packet data service without sacrificing voice capacity in the network," said Li Zhengmao, Deputy Chief Technology Officer of China Unicom. "LAS-CDMA's data capability will meet the requirements for high-capacity, high-speed wireless services based on its efficient use of current spectrum resources. Therefore, LAS-CDMA will be the best choice for current and future wireless networks."
"As an operator, China Mobile deploys only those systems that are compatible with 2G and 3G mobile telecom systems," said Li Mofang, China Mobile's chief technical officer. "LAS-CDMA is a novel concept and technology that meets our criteria and will help us grow quickly with little, if any, added infrastructure costs."
According to Zou Zu Yie, LinkAir's chairman, LinkAir intends to develop LAS-CDMA standards for all three major 3G international standards -- W-CDMA, cdma2000 and TD-SCDMA -- within the 3GPP and 3GPP2 organizations.

backwards compatible with all current 2G and 3G wireless standards, including W-CDMA, cdma2000, TD-SCDMA and GSM, ... without having to make significant changes or additions to their current networks. Nice trick, I'd like to see a technical explaination of how it is done. - DPR
