Consortium Establishes Satellite/DVD Standard
japanbiztech.com

March 19, 1997 -- This June, several companies will establish a new company to support the creation of digital-video-disc-formatted digital satellite broadcast contents. Leading the drive is Japan Image Communications, which provides programming to PerfecTV.

The new firm will provide the capital needed for the conversion to DVD format, and handle other issues (such as copyright processing) expected to occur during the conversion. The new firm's actions are expected to facilitate the creation of DVDs holding recorded programs previously broadcast by digital satellite broadcasting, as well as support operations involved in processing unreleased digital materials into the DVD format.

In addition to JIC, the new company's participants will include a DVD equipment manufacturer, a lease company, and a printing company.

Digital satellite broadcast services such as PerfecTV digitize images by compressing them with MPEG II encoding, just as in DVD. For this reason, creating a DVD version of programs created for digital satellite broadcast is technologically simple. The major problems will involve tangential issues such as conversion costs and copyright issues. With the new company resolving these issues, the creation of DVD formatted information should accelerate. This year alone, financial support by the new company will facilitate the conversion of three titles into DVD format. Currently, DVD equipment developers and manufacturers face lagging sales due to the low number of DVD titles available. Those firms anticipate that converting existing digital satellite contents to DVD format will increase sales.
